In this whip-smart book, four strangers become friends, first because they can’t sleep, then because one of them needs help. Sybil, an empty-nest mother whose twins have just left for college, is experiencing sleeplessness because her doctor husband is having an affair; Zeke, a pro baseball pitcher, is worried over a possible career-ending injury; and Julian is mourning his wife’s death. Betty is the young waitress who serves the insomniac trio at the diner when they decide to meet in real life for the first time after messaging on a chat board. As the four of them begin to work through their issues, Sybil can’t help but mother-hen Betty, so when the young woman says she wants to be an actress, Sybil helps the server book a local commercial. However, Betty is on the run, and the commercial draws unwanted attention to her in ways that she didn’t expect.
VERDICT Scotch’s (The Rewind) characters solve a compelling mystery whose ending readers won’t easily predict. The novel also features the charming start to a romance between Zeke and Sybil that doesn’t overwhelm the main plot.
