LJ 150 Sure Bet Poll Methodology

The Sure Bets book poll invited participation from Library Journal editors, columnists, reviewers, and the broader readership (subscribers and general readers). This is the methodology it followed.

The Sure Bets book poll invited participation from Library Journal editors, columnists, reviewers, and the broader readership (subscribers and general readers). Editors, columnists, and reviewers were invited directly, while members of the public were invited through multiple outreach channels including Library Journal’s email newsletters, social media posts, and website promotion. Respondents were asked to list up to 20 book titles across each of 15 categories: Biography/Memoir, Cookbooks, Fantasy, Graphic Novels, Historical Fiction, Horror, Life+Style, Literary Fiction, Mystery, Narrative Nonfiction, Poetry, Pop Fiction, Romance. Science Fiction, and Suspense/Thriller. A total of 137 respondents participated, comprising 21 editors, columnists, and reviewers and 116 general audience members. Collectively, respondents submitted 2,062 book titles. Among these, 290 titles (approximately 14%) were submitted more than once, representing books that appeared across multiple responses. All book submissions were aggregated, cleaned, and normalized to correct variations in title formatting, spelling, and author attribution. Classifications were corrected and normalized. Missing ISBNs were supplemented when available. Once standardized, a weighted scoring system was applied: editors, columnists, and reviewers were given a weight of 3, while general audience submissions were weighted at 1 point each. Weighted point totals determined the overall ranking of titles across all categories.

Author Selection Process: The 15 authors with the highest rankings are featured on each published list. If an author received a high ranking for more than one book, each title was represented on the featured list, resulting in lists numbering more than 15 titles. In cases where more than one author received the same ranking number and a choice needed to be made among them so as to not exceed the 15 author limit, LJ book review editors made the selection based on current popularity, genre/subject trends, and book availability.
