A decade after his last book in his “Calloway Trilogy” featuring married couple Corrine and Russell Calloway, McInerney (
Bright, Precious Days) checks in on the couple and their grown children shortly before the start of the COVID epidemic. Several chapters set in large gatherings in early 2020 come with the tension of wondering which one will end up being the super-spreader event, but despite the setting, the pandemic takes a backseat to an examination of the ups and downs of marriage. This is not the first book to explore such a theme, but many others can become ponderous and dependent on the charm of their protagonists. That is not the case here. The Calloway family and their friends are not always likable, but the story is never boring, and at times, it’s quite moving.
VERDICT Previous knowledge of the earlier novels is not required to become absorbed in the family’s story and to be curious about their fate. For readers who enjoy family drama with a touch of self-deprecation and New York City settings.
