MAY 2026 [spreadsheet] [Edelweiss collection] Timed to arrive with the start of beach-read season, Portia Elan’s literary fiction debut, Homebound, is a sparkling way to welcome summer. Scribner bought it in a preempt that set the Frankfurt Book Fair talking. Elan has worked as a teacher and public librarian and was a Lambda Literary Fellow. In her novel, she celebrates the power of stories, centering the action—unfolding across multiple locales and time periods—on a cherished video-game narrative, which illuminates the lives of many. Expect a big push. It is already getting PR attention, with splashy blurbs and comparisons to Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin, Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel, and Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr. 

Another debut of note is Artifacts (S&S) by Natalie Lemle. It is a thriller set in two timelines. In the first, attorney Lena Connolly helps on a case of repatriating looted Roman art, including a dichroic glass cup. In the second, a college-aged Lena is working on a dig in Italy during her summer abroad and falling in love with both archaeology and a man she meets at the dig site. As the adult Lena remembers her college experience, she begins to unravel what happened on the dig. Author Lemle has a library connection too, serving on the board of the Associates of the Boston Public Library.

The biblio network does not stop there. Naomi Ishiguro, who once worked as a bookseller and bibliotherapist at Mr B’s Emporium of Reading Delights in Bath, England, offers The Rainshadow Orphans (Saga), which launches a trilogy. To be printed with a stunning cover and edges stenciled with a lovely cat motif, the book is influenced by Japanese folklore and Studio Ghibli films. Ishiguro’s fantasy crime story takes place over two days—full of tea, dragons, hackers, and more—and fills 640 pages.

One more notable fantasy is Jeaniene Frost’s dark romantasy, A Curse of Beasts and Magic (Bramble). This gender-flipped “Beauty and the Beast” launches a new series and will gets a 175K-copy first printing and a special design package. In our SFF preview, Ilona Andrews mentioned it as an especially anticipated title.

Other books to note include Mai Corland’s Verity Guild (Entangled: Red Tower), with a 450K-copy first printing; Veronica Roth’s Seek the Traitor’s Son (Tor), a series launch that nets a 250K-copy first printing; Murder Most Delicious (Harper Perennial) by Danielle Postel-Vinay (a.k.a. Danielle Trussoni, author of The Puzzle Box), a cozy culinary mystery with a 100K-copy initial run; Eloisa James’s The Last Lady B (Gallery), which upends the marrying-for-money trope; the historical A Perfect Hand (Knopf), Ayelet Waldman’s return to fiction; Walter Mosley’s Ghalen: A Romance in Black (Amistad), with a 100K-copy first printing; and Douglas Stuart’s John of John (Grove).
