JUNE 2026 [ Edelweiss Collection  | Spreadsheet] These books may be publishing during the height of summer vacations and parties, but as LJ begins its 150th year with this first issue of 2026, we are focused on another kind of celebration: of librarians, books, authors, and readers. Prepub Alert was created in 1988 by Nora Rawlinson, then LJ’s Book Review Editor, who went on to create EarlyWord. The mission of the column was to ensure that big books and key titles were highlighted early so librarians could get them on order as quickly as possible, keeping libraries at the forefront of the book conversation and allowing time to monitor holds to make certain that sufficient copies were stocked to meet reader demand. The new books this month exemplify Prepub Alert’s mission. Here are big books by big authors, intriguing debuts getting early buzz, and titles that are defining trends.

The PEN/Faulkner and Women’s Prize for Fiction winner Ann Patchett starts with a 500K-copy first printing for Whistler (Harper). The novel traces the story of a stepdaughter and stepfather who lost contact for a long time, only to find each other again and consider their connection and life choices. Carnegie Medal winner Ruta Sepetys also has a big title arriving, A Fortune of Sand (Ballantine). This work of historical fiction is set in Prohibition-era Detroit and follows the daughter of an automotive magnate who tries to escape her restrictive gilded world, only to find a great deal of danger. Lisa See also offers historical fiction, with Daughters of the Sun and Moon (Scribner), set in post–Civil War Los Angeles. Jesse Q. Sutanto moves from mystery to dark fantasy with An Edge Sharp Enough (Harper Voyager), getting a 100K-copy first printing for the shift in genre. The story involves an assassin, a scholar, a con man, and a guard who become involved in a continent-spanning quest to find lost magic and somehow stop their world from crumbling.

Big debuts in June come in the form of speculative fiction. Isabel J. Kim, who has earned the Nebula, Locus, and Shirley Jackson prizes for her short stories, gets a 250K-copy first printing for her debut novel, Sublimation (Tor). The story explores immigration, but in this world, when a person immigrates, a copy of them remains behind. In The Traveler (Tor), which gets a 175K-copy first printing, Joseph Eckert writes about time travel, as Scott Treder falls through the slippery stuff, in constantly increasing intervals. Retro (Ballantine) by Jessica M. Goldstein is also about time travel. It follows a tour guide who takes parties to historical settings, only to realize that the past is impacting her future.

Genre blends continue on trend with two key horror/SF blends. Bram Stoker and Locus Award winner Paul Tremblay’s Dead but Dreaming of Electric Sheep (Morrow) offers a sharply funny and horrific look at a tech future, while Bram Stoker and Alex Award winner Daniel Kraus blends space opera and horror in The Sixth Nik (Saga).
