Sun (biological sciences, Central Western Univ.; The Liars of Nature and the Nature of Liars: Cheating and Deception in the Living World) winningly takes his experience and knowledge and translates it into a book for the masses. The writing style and flow are easy to follow, keeping readers engaged and eager to read the next line. Sun clearly demonstrates his knowledge and passion for the topic by using a wide variety of example species and incorporating helpful, but decipherable, footnoted additions. Explaining complex scientific concepts and using examples from microscopic species can bog down writing, but Sun writes in a way that encourages readers to dive deeper rather than skip ahead. Given the subject matter, the author does an excellent job of crafting a story that a wide range of age groups could consume while imparting new information to all readers.
VERDICT This is a terrific example of a scholar sharing his knowledge with the public in a way that is engaging and understandable to a wide range of people while remaining intellectually stimulating.
