The Idallik Knights will defend against the forces of necromancy, even as it and the Grim Lords who wield it have slowly faded away from the world. Mathaiik was raised to become one of these powerful knights, but his magic has not manifested the weapon needed to ascend. Then a new threat comes from the forests—in fact, is of the forests themselves—and Math wakes the Grim Lord underneath the knights’ home—the necromancer, Kaiataris. When Math is deemed a traitor, he goes on the run with Kaia, hoping to find refuge. Now Math must choose one of two evils: the one causing issues now or the one he has been raised to extinguish. A wrong choice could mean the end of not only Math’s world but of everything and everyone alive. Lyons (The Sky on Fire) continues to show her writing style of strong worldbuilding, sharp action, and fully realized characters.
