Juniper O’Reilly feels content in life. He has his cozy cottage, his flock of ducks, and his best friend and roommate of 10 years, Morn “Mo” Elmthorn. As Juniper watches Mo yearn for more adventure, he’s afraid Mo will leave, so between celebrating the harvest at the tavern and starting a drunken fight, the duo embark on a quest to hunt for a dragon. Everyone knows that dragons have not been seen in forever, but Juniper and Mo find one. However, the dragon is actually a little girl looking for her family. Juniper may finally discover that as much as he hates camping and the dark and losing his pants, maybe, just maybe, he can actually be a hero and admit his true feelings for Mo along the way—if he doesn’t mess it all up first, which, of course, he will.
VERDICT Roche’s (We Are the Match, writing as Mary E. Roach) delightful queer cozy fantasy is full of heart, humor, buried feelings, and found family. Hand to fans of TJ Klune and Travis Baldree.
